Flying, Ranching, and Rodeo: The Maines Family Life in Rural Alberta

Meet Jennifer and Tyrone Maines—ranchers, parents, and passionate rural Albertans. Jennifer is a WestJet pilot and flight instructor who commutes to Calgary just once a week. She lives her dream of flying while still getting to be a cowgirl at home. Tyrone, a professional bullfighter and natural resource management graduate, finds rural Alberta the perfect home base for his rodeo career.

Together, they raise their daughter outside of Oyen in the Special Areas—where rural living isn’t about sacrifice, it’s about freedom. They’ve found more connection, more opportunity, and more for their daughter than they ever expected.

This is part of the Return to Rural series—real stories of living, working, and thriving in Alberta’s Special Areas.
